Notorious BIG’s crown up for auction at Sotheby’s

An iconic piece of hip-hop history is up for auction – the crown worn by the Notorious B.I.G. in his last recorded photoshoot.

Biggie wore this crown just three days before he was shot dead on 9 March 1997. It is made of plastic and would be worthless without its connection to the rapper, with Sotheby’s estimating it will sell for at least $200,000.

The event, which takes place in New York on 15 September, will celebrate the history and cultural impact of hip-hop, according to the auction house, which says the items offer an introspective look at two of rap’s most well-known figures.

At the auction are are also 22 signed love letters from a 16-year-old Tupac Shakur – sent to Kathy Loy during their time together at the Baltimore School for the Arts in the late 1980s.

Shakur’s letters include correspondence with Jada Pinkett-Smith, who was a former school friend and girlfriend of the rapper, with the auction house estimating they will fetch $60,000 – $80,000 (£45,000 – £60,000).
